Raissa's French Market
A few years ago one of my relatives wrote a book about our family's ancestry and only then did I become aware of a few interesting facts. Her research revealed that the original frenchman named La Caille had come from Normandy, France and settled in the island of Martinique, in the Caribbean. Subsequently, during the decree of the Spanish Medulla the family became part of the colonization of the island of Trinidad. This French family was rewarded with hundreds of acres of land and so the association of the La Caille name and land ownership became synonymous. However, Provence is one of my favorite places in France. I love its rich artistic culture, the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables, the weather; and most importantly the outdoor markets. Living on the island of Trinidad afforded our family every opportunity of a typical french lifestyle and more.
I created Raissa's French Market to showcase my heritage, my culinary and artistic skills and to share some of the talents that I inherited from my mother and grandmothers and which I have never ceased to develop over the years. I am a porcelain artist and I also paint on ceramic tiles as well as with watercolor. My maternal grandmother must be credited for my earliest interest in culinary herbs and embroidery. Although my grandfather was not a baker, he owned a bakery and at an early age whenever I visited the bakery I would assist in counting the loaves for delivery. Besides been mesmerized by the smell of freshly baked bread in the old-fashioned oven, I keenly observed the baker in every step of the bread making process.
In my teens I was preparing gourmet meals for my family and attended many classes in gourmet cuisine at the French Institute. I have always approached food preparation and presentation with my knowledge of French cuisine and my artistic abilities. Food should not only taste good but look fantastic!
I hope you enjoy my blog and also feel free to share your thoughts.
